The lure of the sea may be one thing or maybe it’s just the lure of your home town, either way artists like Emin and Turner, to name obviously just a couple are artists who have been inspired by towns like Margate and Weymouth. Turner no doubt was enamoured with the colours and changing moods of the sea, the sky, the landscape and its ever changing characters as content for his subject matter and themes. Emin it seems has been more inspired by her home town and making sure she leaves a legacy of art there to boost it as a town, not necessarily a subject matter inspiration.
Margate is a seaside town that has had image problems but the artistic boost from resident Emin and her determination to uplift her hometown’s image is inspiring.
The artistic eye of photojournalist David Hicks, however also focused recently on his childhood town of Weymouth and his latest collection of images of Winter Weymouth. But it was on a recent visit that he photographed these and rediscovered jus how empty and dead the place was in winter. This collection of images shows a town that has closed down, as of course they do out of season., but somehow it obviously felt so much more neglected and sad, with the ice cream and seaside rides all shut down and perhaps an atmosphere of abandonment, to Hicks and hence his collection captured his and the town’s mood of the moment.
Your vision and the images you choose to share with your viewers are so personal, they tell a story and an emotion that is instant and unchanging from that moment and this is why photography is such a fascinating artistic tool to use to express a moment in time, an emotion and a vision.
The power of where we live and the influence that can have on our lives and the effects it can have for the rest of our lives can be more substantial than many of us realise. Whether you grew up surrounded by fields, mountains, seaside or high rise buildings this surrounding landscape shapes us and can influence what we put back into our lives and the world. We may embrace those surroundings, be inspired and motivated by them or want to return and rescue them, either way when these emotions come out in the form of art, in its intimacy, it is so moving to experience and does indeed leave a legacy for generations more to enjoy, relate to or further explore and improve.
