Liverpool, known for its fantastic (some may think) football team, amazing accents and cracking creative talent. Whilst not the capital city of the UK it is most certainly one of the most creative capitals, in my humble opinion.
Liverpool has gifted the country with immense talents from across the creative fields and nurtured some of our most infamous names: The Beatles, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Atomic Kitten, we could rattle off famous Liverpudlian faces all day.
And it’s not just maverick musicians that hail from lovely Liverpool. Mr Bond, James Bond (Daniel Craig) spent much of his childhood in the City, as well as Taron Egerton and Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer.
Despite the creativity that oozes out of Liverpool, I myself have never had the pleasure of visiting. With current UK restriction in place, my next best bet was to see Liverpool through the eyes of someone else.
The head hunt began to see the sights of Liverpool and get a taste for the city using the wonders of the internet. The search quickly led me to contemporary artist Brian Parker’s website. A visual artist and painter frequently inspired by and depicting landscapes and architecture.
Brian Parkers’ piece ‘The View from Tate Liverpool’ is exactly the view I was seeking; a beautiful and life-like depiction of the city. Vivid and eye-catching, Parker captures the magic of this creative city. The painting oozes life, with its vivid bold colours and that eerie yet intriguing sense of depth that feels as if I am there in person, witnessing this wonderful city view.
The window panes frame the view across the rooftops to the Museum of Liverpool and its iconic ‘Imagine Peace, art PR campaign, with the John Lennon exhibition logo and the famous Liver Building. The contrast of contemporary and classic architecture perhaps purposely highlighted in this landscape emphasising the diversity of the city.
There is something utterly special about seeing a city through someone else’s eyes. Whilst a trip to Liverpool is certainly on the cards for me post-pandemic, Brain Parker’s ‘The View from Tate Liverpool’ will just have to suffice in the mean-time and maybe a virtual tour around the museum!
Brian Parker reaffirms my belief that Liverpool truly is our creative capital; a vivid and colourful place full of life he so effortlessly captures through art.
If you’re looking for Great British creativity, then look no further, Liverpool is most certainly where you will find it.
