Having worked on Brand PR of all kinds over the years, from fashion to tech to books and beyond, we know that it can often be a lonely, frustrating process trying to launch yourself on your own. Surrounding yourself with the right people with the right skills and experience is a great way to give yourself the best possible chance at success. Take Penguin Books as an example – from recognising a gap in the market to creating visual appeal to adapting with the times, to remain at the top takes courage, tenacity and a great team around you!
- Now part of the huge global company, Penguin Random House, Penguin Books was founded in 1935 in London by publisher Allen Lane as a result of the poor quality paperback books he saw on sale at Exeter train station after a visit to a friend. His friend…Agatha Christie!
- Determined to make quality literature available to everyone at not only cheap prices but in a high-quality format, it was a purchase of 63,000 books by Woolworths which gave rights holders the confidence to reduce their licensing costs low enough for Lane to pay for enough licenses to establish the Penguin brand fully – within ten months he had published a million books.
- The penguin logo was devised by 21-year-old office junior, Edward Young, later a highly-decorated submarine commander. Young also created the instantly recognisable three-band cover design, with each colour denoting a specific imprint – orange and white for general fiction; green and white for crime fiction; cerise and white for travel and adventure; dark blue and white for biographies; yellow and white for miscellaneous; red and white for drama; the rarer purple and white for essays and belles-lettres and grey and white for world affairs
- Never afraid of bucking the trend and pushing the boundaries, Penguin has published several titles which have caused a media stir or have even been banned, including DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover; Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses and Peter Wright’s Spycatcher.
- Penguin plant a tree for every new staff member they hire!
