One instantly recognisable brand which has both retained it’s heritage yet still adapted with the times is film studio MGM. Here are five facts you might not know about the big cat of Hollywood!
- Although it’s established itself as one of the most successful and easily recognised film companies in the world, it was actually the last major studio to move from silent films into the world of sound
- It was formed from two existing film studios – Metro Pictures and Goldwyn Pictures and installed film mogul Leo B. Mayer as the head – it was Goldwyn Pictures which came with the now instantly recognisable Leo the Lion logo
- The lion logo was inspired by the mascot of Columbia University. The ring around the lion reads, “Ars Gratia Artis“, Latin for “Art for art’s sake”
- Since 1916, there have been seven different lions used in the roaring logo – their names, so you can look magnificent down your local pub quiz are: Slats; Jackie; Telly; Coffee; Tanner; George and, naturally, Leo.
- Leo has survived as the logo lion since 1957, making his debut at the opening of the Elvis film, Jailhouse Rock. Despite a wobble in 2010 when MGM briefly filed for bankruptcy, MGM is still going strong in the digital world.
