Here at Quite Great, we have a long and documented history of working with legendary rock acts to help get them the media coverage that their music deserves. We’ve worked with everyone from Mick Jagger, Guns N’ Roses, Tom Petty, Nickleback, Fightstar, and so many more. Between our founder and CEO Pete Bassett, our head of rock music PR Rick Newman, and our dedicated team of rock-loving PR experts, we consider ourselves the experts when it comes to putting together a rock music PR campaign. When contacted by legendary 90’s rockers Mr. Big to help promote their 30th Anniversary reissue of their classic album ‘Lean Into It,’ we knew that we had to do something special, and we knew that we were the team to deliver the goods.
Who are Mr. Big?
The band truly needs no introduction, but just to refresh your memory, here’s a quick summary.
Mr. Big were one of the few “shredder” pop metal bands (translation: the band members were highly proficient at their instruments) that prized song-craft as highly as virtuosity. The seeds for the group’s formation were sown when bass player extraordinaire Billy Sheehan, often called “the Eddie Van Halen of bass,” left David Lee Roth’s solo band in 1988. Shortly thereafter, he began piecing together a new outfit comprised of former Racer X guitarist Paul Gilbert, drummer Pat Torpey, and singer Eric Martin. By 1989, the newly formed quartet had already inked a recording contract with Atlantic, resulting in the release of a self-titled debut the same year.
The quartet broadened its horizons on its sophomore effort, 1991’s ‘Lean into It,’ which included the melodic psychedelic rocker ‘Green Tinted Sixties Mind’ as well as a pair of ballads that would become sizeable singles: the number one smash ‘To Be with You’ and the Top 20 hit ‘Just Take My Heart.’ The band continued multiple successful albums before their amicable split in 2002.
The bands original line-up reunited in 2009 and toured the world. Tragedy struck when drummer Pat Torpey sadly passed away in 2018. Not wanting to continue without Torpey, the band intended to release a final studio album, conduct a farewell tour and disband. However, since then they have been on hiatus. In 2021, the band celebrated the 30th Anniversary of ‘Lean Into It,’ and that is where we come in!
How did we help?
We knew that working on such a legendary album would require a legendary PR campaign. We knew that we had to go big, but we also knew that we had to create as much noise as we could amongst the medium to smaller sized publications too. We have been a rock music PR company for over 30 years, and throughout our years in the industry we’ve built up a huge wealth of contacts with major music publications and radio shows, as well as a mass amount of contacts within the medium to smaller sized outlets. Throughout the campaign, we delivered an 1800 word article in one of the UK’s biggest rock magazines ‘Classic Rock,’ an hour long feature on the UK’s biggest rock radio station ‘Planet Rock,’ a feature on ‘BBC Radio 2,’ a huge feature in the UK’s biggest bass guitar based magazine ‘Bass Player,’ features on ‘Total Rock Radio,’ and ‘MMH Radio,’ and so many more!
